I feel like this is Deja vu. Is it possible that the second book in the series is worse than the first book? Or in the case of Insurgent, more boring? Really, what was the point of this book? I only remember little fragments, probably the most important bits.

We left off in Divergent with the Ravenclaw faction using the Gryffindor’s as zombie puppets and attacking the Hufflepuff. Tris escapes with her brother and some others. It was a good ending, thought it would lead well into the second book but Merlin’s balls was this boring.

Gryffindor is separated, some sticking with their clearly corrupt leaders while others become factionless. They seek refuge in Slytherin (bluntly honest faction). The Ravenclaw’s are still going strong and are hunting down The Hufflepuffs and Divergents, which we are still are unclear about. Seriously, what exactly is a Divergent? It is book two, we should know more than the fact that they are immune to simulation. Unless that is all…in which case, that is REALLY boring.

Somewhere along the line, Four meets his mother, whom he thought was dead, but in truth she was kicked out for cheating on his father and abandoned her son to an abusive father. Charming woman. Tris doesn’t trust her, but Four gets all defensive and thus begins the never ending trust fight between the two love birds. Of course, Tris ends up being right. His mom is bat shit crazy.

Oh, but that doesn’t mean that Tris isn’t stupid. She is. The Ravenclaw’s can still control people and threaten to make people commit suicide unless Tris turns herself in. She promises Four she won’t but ventures off to the Ravenclaw’s compound anyways. She had the audacity to tell Four not to trust his mom and rub it in his face when she is right. He tells her not to go, that the Ravenclaw’s will only kill her so tells him she won’t then sneaks off in the middle of the night.

Now this had to be the most alluring part of the book. Her brother is a back stabbing traitor and has been helping the Ravenclaw’s (the faction he choose) all along. And while Tris is being experimented on, he is behind the scenes watching.

Four run to the rescues, gets captured himself. Then they escape. The factionless form and army, they fight the Ravenclaw’s and kill lady what’s-her-face. You would think that would be the end, but oh no! Four’s mom…that bat shit crazy lady wants to take over, because we didn’t see that coming a mile away. Anyways, the book ends with a group heading out into the…outside world!!!! Intriguing, yes.

My issues with this book. It is simple. IT WAS SO BORING!!!!

In these type of books I expect more action! For Merlin’s sake, we are in a dystopian future with a corrupt government that you need to fight. This isn’t the time for lovey dovey bullshit. I want action. I don’t want hundreds of pages of nothing happening but a couple bickering. Also, despite what happened in the previous book, none of the characters grew. Tris became more of a bitch yes. Four became rather pathetic also. But they didn’t grow or change. They are the same in my eyes, and considering what happened at the end of Divergent that is a shame.

  1. I liked the batshit crazy mom, but I agree about the bickering parts. Kinda annoying. I’m not sure I like the pressure of the plot placed on this relationship. Also, in an interview I saw Veronica Roth was all like ” I don’t, like, know what happened between Tris and Four for sure, but, like, I think I know what happened.” She wouldn’t flat out say that there was a consummated relationship involved. Sure, the main character is 16, but be upfront and own up to your characters. I think keeping the reader out of the loop isn’t very nice. With so much relying on the tragedy of the relationship, why be coy when YOU WERE THE ONE WHO WROTE THE BOOK? Just you wait until you review of book 3, Erica. Then the gloves come off.
